Magnolia Habaths
My journey to becoming a designer was sparked by a combination of art and the influence of my father, who owns a landscape design company. As a designer, I specialize in creating tropical gardens, drawing inspiration from the lush landscapes of the Caribbeans. I am also deeply influenced by traditions and believe they can be beautifully integrated into garden designs.
My design philosophy revolves around creating harmonious and sustainable spaces that reflect the natural beauty of the tropics while honoring cultural traditions. I strive to design gardens that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally friendly and functional, providing a serene and inspiring outdoor experience.
Biography:
Magnolia Habaths hails from the picturesque island of Willemstad, Curacao, and has always been captivated by the great outdoors. Growing up on a farm with her older sister, Magnolia’s childhood was filled with adventures in nature and a deep connection to the land and its animals. This early exposure to the beauty of the natural world laid the foundation for her lifelong love and passion for the outdoors.
As a child, Magnolia was always very artistic, enjoying drawing but finding her true passion in painting. In high school, she decided to specialize in art, taking an AP art class for a year. This experience deepened her love for art and helped her realize how she could integrate it into her career.
The project transforms a 5-acre site in Curaçao into a unique resort that harmoniously blends the island’s natural beauty with its rich cultural heritage. Centered on cultural biomimicry, the design draws inspiration from the natural forms of the divi-divi tree (Libidibia Coriaria) and Curaçao’s cultural traditions. By emulating the tree’s adaptive strategies and integrating local customs, the resort aims to create a sustainable and culturally resonant space. The design incorporates native plants and natural materials, prioritizing sustainability and enhancing ecological balance. It celebrates Curaçao’s unique identity through its architectural and landscape design, providing versatile spaces for events, recreation, and relaxation. The resort targets guests seeking immersive experiences connected to nature and local culture, families looking for interactive play areas, event organizers needing versatile venues, and locals seeking a community space that reflects their heritage. The objectives include creating an environmentally sustainable landscape that conserves water and supports biodiversity, celebrating cultural heritage with traditional design elements and local art, fostering community engagement through spaces for gatherings and play, enhancing the resort’s ambiance with visually striking elements, and ensuring functionality across all features. This holistic approach combines sustainability, cultural richness, and community engagement, making the resort a true celebration of Curaçao’s identity.
