Judy Shardlow
I’m Judy Shardlow – that’s me with Carol Klein at my first show garden in 2014 at BBC Gardener’s World Live. My garden won an RHS Silver Gilt and was extensively featured on BBC television coverage of the show. I went on to win another award in 2016 when a garden designed in Harpenden, Hertfordshire won a BALI Award for best domestic garden (£60-100K category) and that garden features as one of the projects on my profile.
I had the pleasure of studying the London College of Garden Design Planting Diploma in 2017, graduating with distinction and the best planting design, judged by RHS gold medallist, Kate Gould. I am now a fully fledged garden designer based in Hertfordshire, but also completing projects in parts of Wimbledon, Hampshire and other areas of the home counties.

Biography:
I’m Judy Shardlow an award winning garden and landscape designer working in Harpenden, St Albans, Welwyn Garden City and other areas of Hertfordshire and London.
I’m passionate about good garden and landscape design that reflects your life and style. Excellent design is at the heart of quality of life and I work to ensure that a combination of carefully considered garden design, highest quality landscaping and breath-taking planting will transform your outdoor space into the garden you’ve always wanted.
I’m an award winning garden designer, winning RHS Silver Gilt at BBC Gardeners World Live in 2014, and more recently, a Harpenden garden I designed won a the BALI Large Domestic Garden Award 2016 (£60-100K) category.
I involve clients fully and openly in the design process and as a result my customers get a designed garden which fits their their needs and which they fall in love with. Over 20 years as a gardener has also given me a love of the shape, colour and scent and magic that plants can bring to my designs. I work with selected plant and tree nurseries to provide the best quality, hand selected plants to complete a scheme. In the same way I work with selected high quality BALI (British Association of Landscaping Industries) landscapers to deliver your garden design, with beautiful results.
Excellent garden design, attention to detail and excellent customer service are the hallmarks of my work.

BALI Award Best Domestic Garden (£60-100K) 2016
This town garden in Harpenden was completely re-designed. Previously the layout of the garden was very linear with lines of straight walls which emphasised the lack of depth of the garden and led the eye to the dominant, elevated brick wall on the rear boundary. Use of circular shapes, beautiful flights of steps between the different levels of the garden, interesting texture and beautiful planting were also designed to hold the eye in the heart of the garden and to draw the eye around sweeping shapes, creating interest, intrigue and increase the perception of depth.
Yellow quartz paddlestones were used to clad walls which separate three different levels within the garden, with a sweeping flight of sandstone steps from the patio into the main garden and a further sweeping flight of steps up to the community parkland beyond.
A key objective was to create an area of warmth and seclusion in the patio area. An outdoor table and outdoor sofa and armchairs were recommended for the newly created south facing patio, enclosed within a beautiful arc of paddlestone walling. The aspect and reflected warmth back onto the patio from the wall and nearby house has served to make this area a warm and sheltered spot, supplemented with attractive sun-loving planting and a simple waterfall which brings ambience and relaxation to the the seating area. Up-lights onto the wall also cast the stone into dramatic relief, making this a feature which is enjoyed from inside the house, even in the depths of winter. Feature up-lighting on a multi-stemmed Amelanchier also provides night time drama.
The front garden was also re-designed to created more definition and identity for the relatively small curtilage. The objective was to create an attractive area of low maintenance interest, clearly distinct from the gravel drive. Separation was provided using simple box (Buxus) balls, and beach effects with glacial boulders, cobbles, pebbles and gravel.
This garden won a BALI (British Association of Landscaping Industries) Award for Best Domestic Garden in 2016.
